Kaiser Permanente’s
STD/HIV Prevention Program Grades 9-12
Sexual activity places young people at risk for HIV infection and other STDs, as well as unwanted pregnancy. In 2009, 46% of high school students reported they were sexually active. According to the CDC, each year there are 19 million new STD infections and almost half of them among adolescents aged 15-24*. It is important to inform teens about high risk behaviors, how to protect themselves and available resources.
Kaiser Permanente’s STD/HIV prevention program for grades 9-12 uses visual monitors, text messaging, cellular and computer technology to better reach its audience and to clearly illustrate its message: there are epidemic rates of STDs in the high school age group. It supports the Health Education Content Standards for California Public Schools in the areas of mental, emotional and social health, injury prevention and safety, and growth, development and sexual health.
THE KEY CONCEPTS:
Abstinence is the only risk-free option
If you are sexually active, getting tested is important
If you are sexually active, only a condom can reduce your risk of contracting or spreading an STD
The Play (60 minutes)
What Goes Around - tells the story of five friends as they navigate their way through the final days of high school. When one of them contracts two sexually transmitted diseases, the issues of friendship and honesty cause them to question their relationships with each other and to consider their past and future choices.
The program provides health information about sexually transmitted diseases in a topical way. Students hear the facts and myths about STDs and see how the choices they make have a lasting impact on the lives of other people.
The 60 minute program includes a play, Q&A session and a talkback session. At the end of the show, students receive information on free resources in their area.
Kaiser Permanente’s Educational Theatre has served Southern California for the past 25 years. With a total audience of a quarter of a million each year, ET inspires children, teens and adults to make informed decisions about their health and build stronger communities. All programs are a free, community benefit of Kaiser Permanente. www.kp.org/etp
