Course Description:

 

  1. The Spanish Classes meets 4 times a week. The Spanish class will be taught with Science and Medicine in mind, allowing us to fusion material from the textbooks along with Current Events and lessons and activities related to health, nutrition, medicine and other topics along the line of the medical fields.

 

  1. Textbooks: It is the students’ responsibility to use the textbooks provided by LAUSD appropriately. All the Spanish books are also available online.

 

  1. To meet the State Standards, students will utilize resources such as lectures, group work, the textbook, newspapers, the dictionary, the Internet, documentaries & films, news, etc. An increase effort to utilize medical and scientific terminology is part of the class.

 

  1. To develop accurate pronunciation skills, students will be challenged to listen to Spanish almost 100% of the time during instruction and practices and will be expected to practice outside the class, what they learn in class.

 

  1. Inter-curricular activities will be used to support the learning of the Spanish Language & Culture such as music, health, nutrition, geography, history, arts & crafts, online activities, field trips, etc.

 

  1. Academic skills such as Reading, Writing, interpersonal Speaking, Translating, Listening, and Presenting to an audience will be implemented to support and reinforce the target language.

 

 

Course Objectives: Students will…

 

  1. Develop their speaking confidence and increase their pronunciation and fluency while gaining vocabulary that is applicable to science and medicine.

 

  1. Practice and become familiar with lifesaving sentences and communication skills needed between a patient and members of a medicine field.

 

  1. Utilize resources such as Chrome books & textbooks to acquire knowledge and information to assist them on the understanding of the products, perspectives and general culture of the Spanish language.

 

  1. Collaborate and work in groups to develop projects and presentations for a common grade.

 

  1. Increase their vocabulary and a variety of grammar techniques to use both in writing and in speaking, using technology and applications that support the language acquisition.

 

  1. AP Spanish students will gain specific techniques to help them take the National AP exam

 

 

Teacher’s Expectations:

 

  1. Students are accountable for their actions (behavior, electronic policies, uniform, etc) and should understand and abide by the LAUSD’s rules, KDM’s rules and the class’ rules.

  1. No outside food allowed in my classroom.

 

  1. Students should attend all class meetings, be on time, participate, and complete all warm ups, online practices, conversation exercises and other classroom and home assignments.

 

  1. Parents are asked to monitor their sons and daughters school activities, check their assignments, advise them regarding self-discipline, encourage them to use good manners and tolerance all the time, teach them to practice appropriate conduct and to remind them about using acceptable vocabulary and body language.

 

 

Attendance and punctuality:

For any absence or tardiness, a signed EXCUSE should be submitted to the Attendance Office immediately.

 

Grading System:    

Your grade is your responsibility. Attend class, participate, complete assignments by due date, etc will help you achieve the grade you deserve.   If you miss a class, please check Schoology, get notes from classmates, and if necessary, make an appointment for tutoring during Nutrition and/or Homeroom.

 

Grading System:

90-100 % = A

80-89 % = B

70- 79 % = C

60 -69 % = D

less than 60% = Failing

 

 

Work Habits and Cooperation:  marks that are generated by punctuality, behavior, participation and effort

 

Your behavior and appropriate social interaction is important to help you and those around you perform to the best of your ability. Avoid detention, visits to the Dean, change of seats, calls home, and any behavior modification regarding discipline and remember that there is a lot of people having expectations on you.

 

 

E: Excellent (Perfect at meeting rules and academic standards)

S: Satisfactory (Good effort to accomplish goals)

U: Unsatisfactory (lack of interest, poor behavior, wasting time and energy)

 

 

Comment Codes:

There are 71 codes LAUSD uses to communicate with parents during the progress reports.

 

For example:

 # 01 = Exceptional work

 #12 = In danger of falling

 #13 = Absent or late constantly

 # 19= Talks to much (this one is certainly important specially if at the same tame is affecting classmates reaching their own goals)

# 36 = Contributes greatly to the class
