Welcome!
I’m Mrs. Latrice L. Washington, and I am thrilled to be your English teacher this year.
A storyteller at heart, I bring both a pen in one hand and a passion for people in the other. Before I began teaching, I worked for over a decade in television production, helping to shape compelling stories behind the scenes of shows like The Soul Train Music Awards, Deadliest Catch, MythBusters, and Fear Factor. My background in media and storytelling continues to influence how I teach literature, writing, and critical thinking today.
This is my 14th year as a classroom teacher and my 8th year here at King/Drew. I’ve previously taught English Language Arts and Theater Arts at Mervyn M. Dymally High School, and English, Creative Writing, and Theater Arts at Frederick Douglass Academy Charter High School. Whether guiding students through complex texts or helping them discover their voices as writers, I aim to make every lesson meaningful, rigorous, and relevant.
I hold a Master of Arts in English and Creative Writing with a Screenwriting emphasis from Southern New Hampshire University and a Bachelor of Arts in Theater Arts from Cal Poly Humboldt. I also earned my Single Subject Teaching Credential in English from CSU Dominguez Hills. I’m a UCLA Writing Project Fellow and was recently honored as a 2024 Claes Nobel Educator of Distinction.
In addition to teaching, I’m also a published author. My debut release, Remembering Love, a novella, is a heartfelt new adult romance that explores grief, healing, and second chances. I love writing stories that center on emotional truth, layered characters, and authentic experiences, values I also strive to bring into my classroom.
Outside of school, I enjoy designing special events, crafting jewelry, and traveling with my husband, Henry.
I look forward to a year of powerful learning, meaningful conversations, and creative exploration with all of you.
